south asian mental health
As Dr. Denese is one of the only South Asian and Muslim psychologists on the East Coast (including NYC & Boston), she is dedicated to providing safe spaces for individuals seeking a skilled mental health provider with similar life experiences.
Dr. Denese is a second-generation immigrant whose parents made the courageous decision to immigrate from Bangladesh in the ‘80s in search of better opportunities. She spent her formative years growing up in Queens, New York City, which is known for its Asian immigrant community. Alongside her parents, she was raised by her aunties, who played an integral role in her upbringing and cultural education.
The stigma around mental illness in her community motivated Dr. Denese to become a psychologist. This attitude harmed those facing mental health challenges and inspired her to promote change and understanding in her community.
Due to her unique upbringing and personal experiences, she is also very familiar with the intricate group dynamics that are often present in South Asian communities. This familiarity allows her to recognize that Western approaches to interpersonal conflict might not be as effectively received or culturally indicated for some individuals within these communities.
In addition, she has a deep understanding of the significant toll that comes with balancing multiple and often conflicting cultural identities. She recognizes the complex challenges that arise when one is raised by a family that holds strong collectivistic values while simultaneously navigating a society that is predominantly driven by individualistic ideals. This unique perspective allows her to empathize with those who face similar struggles in their own lives.
Along with her psychologist role, Dr. Denese facilitates a bi-weekly mental wellness support group for South Asian adults residing globally and runs a bi-monthly virtual book club focused on books by authors from the Bangladeshi diaspora.
